Items relating to m/f 'Norröna'

Norröna I

Originally built at Rendsburg, West Germany, on completion in 1975 for Lion Ferry A/B of Halmstad, Sweden, she was named Gustav Vasa. In 1983 a new ferry company, P/F Smyril Line of Tórshavn, announced the purchase of Gustav Vasa and the ship was re-named Norröna (which is the Old Norse name for the North Atlantic area). The company stated that they were taking over the routes from the Faroes to Norway, Scotland and Denmark (with the addition of Iceland) from the state-owned line Strandfaraskips Landsins and so the ship undertook an extensive refit to prepare her for her regular year-round routes in the North Atlantic.

P/F Smyril  operated a summer network of services to Torshavn from Lerwick, Bergen, Hantsholm and Seydisfjördur. Her regular schedule included a weekly call at Scrabster (Caithness, Scotland). Norröna's first call at this latter terminal was on the morning of 7th June 1983 as part of her regular round trip to Tórshavn and Seyðisfjórður on the south east coast of Iceland.

Norröna II

The latest 'Norröna' was built in 2003 at Flendern Werft AG, Lübeck, and is one of the newest ships in the North Atlantic and the only passenger ship dedicated to operating in the North Atlantic all year round.

Operated by the company P/F Smyril Line of Tórshavn. The ship has a max capacity of 1482 passengers and 800 cars (or 130 trucks/trailers). The vessel currently operates on the Denmark-Faroes-Iceland ferry route between Hirtshals-Tórshavn-Seyðisfjörður. Crossing time between Hirtshals and Tórshavn is 38 hours (during winter months) and 30 hours (during summer). The onwards crossing to Seyðisfjörður takes another 15 hours, excluding the layover in Tórshavn (only during summer).

Norröna has weekly departures from Denmark to the Faroe Islands and Iceland. In the low and mid season Norröna has one weekly departure to the Faroe Islands and in the high season two weekly departures.
