Pre-Stamp Covers


1823 (c.) letter sheet (without contents) from Copenhagen addressed to Trade Manager Mörch, Thorshavn paa Færöe with listing number "30". Very fresh and attractive. Mads Hvads Mörck was Trade Manager in Thorshavn between 1805 and 1831.




Numeral Cancel
- Num
3-ring postmark with number in the centre.
Used only in Tórshavn (238) and Tvøroyri (284). All numeral cancels were withdrawn in 1884.

Franked with an 1870-1872 4 Sk Bicoloured stamp.

Type Num

4 Sk was the Inland Letter rate (250g) during the period 01.04.1871 to 31.12.1874, so this stamp may have been used on such a letter.

The 238 cancel was first introduced on 01.03.1870 when the Thorshavn sub-office was opened and remained in use until 1884.

Franked with an 1875-1903 8 øre Bicoloured stamp.

8 øre was the Inland Letter rate during the period 01.01.1875 to 30.09.1902, so this stamp may have been used on such a letter.

The 238 cancel was first introduced on 01.03.1870 when the Thorshavn sub-office was opened and remained in use until 1884.



Lapidar Cancel
- Lap
Circular dated postmark - sans serif typeface.
Used only in Tórshavn, Klaksvik and Tvøroyri. These postmarks were withdrawn in November 1889 and replaced with bridge cancellers.


THORSHAVN

Franked with a 16 øre Numeral stamp.

Type Lap

16 øre was the rate for Letters/Printed matter to Iceland during the period 01.07 1875 to 30.09.1907 so this stamp may have been used for this purpose.

The Thorshavn lapidar  cancel was introduced on 01.03.1870 when the Thorshavn sub-office was opened, and remained in use until withdrawn in November 1899.



TRANGISVAAG
dated 29.1.1899

Franked with a 8 øre Numeral stamp.

8 øre was the Inland Letter rate during the period 01.01.1875 to 30.09.1902, so this stamp may have been used on such a letter.

The Trangisvaag lapidar  cancel was first introduced in 1884 and remained in use until withdrawn in November 1899.



KLAKSVIG
dated 15.7.1897


Franked with an Iceland 5 Aur stamp.

Datestamp No. 03.01
Type Lap

This stamp will have been on mail taken off a ship arriving from Iceland and cancelled on receipt in the Faroes.

The Klaksvig lapidar  cancel was first introduced in 1888 when  the sub-office was opened and remained in use until withdrawn in November 1899.
